Rally5-Kit Regulations

A General Summary for the ZC31S

CRITICAL: Read This First!

This page is a **general guide** based on typical FIA Rally5-Kit rules. It is **NOT** a substitute for the official FIA Homologation Papers for your specific Suzuki Swift ZC31S Rally5-Kit.

You **MUST** acquire and follow the official homologation documents. Any deviation, even based on this guide, can make your car ineligible to compete.

Core Philosophy

The Rally5-Kit class is designed to be the first rung of the FIA rally ladder. The core idea is simple: You buy **one "Kit"** from an FIA-approved supplier, which contains all the mandatory performance, safety, and suspension parts. You are then **only** allowed to use the parts from this kit. This keeps costs down and ensures performance parity.

Engine

Engine modifications are **extremely limited** and must be from the official kit.

  • Engine Block & Head: Must be the standard ZC31S (M16A) production parts. No internal polishing, porting, or reprofiling.
  • Pistons & Rods: Must be the standard production parts.
  • Kit Parts: The kit will typically provide a **spec, locked ECU** (to control performance), a spec airbox, and a full-length competition exhaust system (manifold, cat, and silencer).

Suspension

This is a major part of the kit. You **must** use the kit-supplied suspension.

  • Dampers & Springs: The kit will provide a full set of gravel- and/or tarmac-spec dampers (e.g., from Ohlins, Reiger, or Bilstein). These are typically 2-way adjustable (rebound/compression) but without remote reservoirs.
  • Suspension Arms: Must remain standard production parts.
  • Mounting Points: Must remain in the standard production locations on the chassis.

Brakes

Brake systems are upgraded for safety and performance, using kit-supplied parts.

  • Calipers & Discs: The kit will provide larger front brake discs and calipers. Rear brakes may be standard or kit-supplied.
  • Hydraulic Handbrake: A kit-supplied, floor-mounted hydraulic handbrake is mandatory.
  • Brake Lines: All flexible brake lines must be upgraded to braided steel.

Rollcage & Safety

This is non-negotiable and the heart of the car's safety.

  • Rollcage: Must be the **exact** FIA-homologated, multi-point, weld-in rollcage specified by the kit manufacturer.
  • Seats & Harnesses: Must be FIA-approved and *in-date*.
  • Fire Extinguishers: Must have an FIA-approved, plumbed-in fire system (nozzles in cockpit and engine bay) plus a handheld extinguisher.
  • Electrical Cut-off: Must have internal and external electrical cut-off switches.

Interior

All non-essential trim must be removed.

  • Stripped: All carpets, headlining, sound deadening, and rear seats must be removed.
  • Dashboard: The standard dashboard is usually kept (or "flocked" to reduce glare).
  • Door Cards: Must be replaced with flat, lightweight cards (e.g., carbon fibre).

Body & Exterior

The car must remain visually similar to the production model.

  • Shell: Must be the standard ZC31S production shell.
  • Underbody Protection: The kit will provide a mandatory alloy sump guard, and likely fuel tank and differential guards.
  • Roof Vent: A kit-supplied roof vent is mandatory.
  • Wheels: Must use a spec-size wheel (e.g., 15" for gravel, 16" for tarmac) from an approved manufacturer (e.g., Braid, Speedline).
